Description
Portrait of my Mom, I used a photo as refs. I will try to upload it later, the photo is not digital so I need a scanner.I know it probably is far from being good, but I tried.
Crits welcome
I hope you'll like it.
Oh yeah, in the photo the light was from the front, that is why there isn't much of shdowing...
EDIT: The previous image was taken by a photo cam, this one is scanned, so I think the details can be seen much better here.
And I used HB-4B pencils.

Yeah, CzarBote has the formula - try using graded pencils (at least three) soft, medium and hard. It should only take a coupla sketches to get the swing of it... You'll wonder how you ever got on without them before! The deal's (generally) medium for outlining and major framework, soft for smoother areas/subtle shading and hard for accenting and fine detail work.

There is nothing wrong with sketching/drawing lightly, but when you commit to it, flesh it out. I see some hard lines in the hair like you started, but just in the hair.
For your next piece I dare you to darken the skin tone overall, push your contrast. Don't use the white of the paper as the natural tone, use it as a highlight, like in watercolors. I love the loosness of the hair, but that same loosness shouldn't be apparent in the contours of her face.
You really like details, I can picture you biting your lip trying to hit every hair that was in your reference
I also recommend YOU STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF!!!! This is good stuff. I like the transiiton (fade) for the shirt as it is not the subject, it was done gradually and in a way so that the portrait doesn't seem to just 'end'.
Keep it up Edite, I look forward to your next piece.
